Camí de sa Farola

The most urban lighthouse in Menorca

  • Complement the visit to the lighthouse with the promenade and a trip to Cala Sa Farola.

  • Pay attention to the wonderful view from the lighthouse towards the port of Ciutadella and the Castillo de San Nicolás, on the front shore.

  • El Faro sa Farola is just 1 km from Ciutadella and this makes it the one most linked to the city and the easiest to reach.

  • Construction began in 1861 and was completed in 1863, being the fifth of the seven that exist in Menorca.

  • It was built very close to the mouth of the port of Ciutadella and at a low height above sea level (21 m). For this reason, during days of strong waves, its facilities suffered the onslaught of water. To prevent this, a retaining wall was erected.

  • The visit to the lighthouse is complemented by the promenade and its viewpoints, as well as the beautiful Cala Sa Farola, of small dimensions.

  • We begin our tour of Menorca visiting this site that combines the most urban lighthouse on the island with an excellent promenade to Cala sa farola.

Defensive tower in an unbeatable environment

  • We recommend this visit, it will not take more than an hour and it represents the link between the city and the sea.

  • The Castle of Sant Nicolau was sent to build between 1680 and 1682 by order of the Spanish. Its objective was the surveillance and defense of the mouth of the port of Ciutadella.

  • The name is due to the patron saint of sailors and an old hermitage that occupied that place.

  • The construction is octagonal, with a 2m deep ditch dug into the rock.

  • Between 1798 and 1802, during the British occupation, some interior compartments were built for the storage of gunpowder and food that were eliminated in later restoration work.

  • It has a drawbridge that leads to the baroque style entrance door.

  • The interior consists of a central column from where a spiral staircase leads to the terrace, which served as an observation, surveillance and artillery tower.

  • At present it is part of the City Hall and can be visited for free.

  • The Castillo de San Nicolás is a defense tower built on the coast, at the mouth of the city's port.
